A few years ago, I realized something.
As a photographer, I could spend my career competing on price, speed, or convenience. There will always be someone younger, someone faster, someone with lower overhead, or someone willing to charge less.
I decided I didn't want that to be the only way I created value.
Around the same time, I noticed that my favorite conversations weren't about cameras. They were about leadership, organizations, and how different people work together to build Southern Nevada.
That observation became the beginning of the Nevada Leadership Archive.
With the encouragement of Jaime Cruz and many other leaders, I started creating collaborative projects that document leadership ecosystems instead of individual organizations. Each project brings together people who share a common mission and preserves a small piece of Nevada's story.
I don't know how far this idea will go.
It's a pioneering project, and there isn't really a roadmap. Maybe it will remain a meaningful personal body of work. Maybe it will grow into something much larger. Time will decide.
What I do know is this: creating it has changed the way I see my profession.
Photography is still my craft, but it is no longer the destination. It has become the way I build relationships, learn from remarkable people, and document the partnerships shaping our state.
Ironically, the more I focus on creating something meaningful beyond photography, the more I enjoy being a photographer.
I still have quiet afternoons between assignments. Sometimes I answer emails. Sometimes I watch a documentary or listen to a podcast. Sometimes I simply think.
Those moments are part of the work, too.
Some hours produce an idea.
And occasionally, one idea becomes a project that didn't exist before.
I don't know exactly where the Nevada Leadership Archive will lead.
But for the first time in my career, I feel like I'm building something instead of simply waiting for the next assignment.
Women in Leadership – Southern Nevada
The first Nevada Leadership Archive collaboration documenting women leading Southern Nevada.
Leading Ladies in Philanthropy
Exploring how philanthropy strengthens communities through collaborative leadership.
Building an Ecosystem that Responds to Employer Needs
Documenting how government, education, workforce, healthcare, and business work together to strengthen Nevada's workforce.
Every project teaches me something new. I'm grateful to the leaders who trust me with their stories, and I'm excited to continue documenting the people and partnerships shaping Nevada.
